review:
Students have the opportunity to become "sailors and scientists" for a day, learning about the ecosystem of Presque Isle Bay, Lake Erie, while also learning to sail aboard a 42-foot Friendship Sloop. On board, students operate a ponar dredge to collect bottom sediment and record the temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and pH at various depths using a Hydrolab. Students return shoreside to analyze their samples, examine a sample taken from a shore-based plankton net and learn important lessons about water quality and pollution as well as the important role people play as stewards to their environment. An accompanying curriculum linked to state standards provides lesson plans related to the physics of sailing, watersheds, invasive species, mayflies, Presque Isle Bay and the Presque Isle AOC. There are excellent content sections, good diagrams and worksheets, but no direct connections between the curriculum and either the water quality tests or plankton sampling. Extensions are minimal, but some actions are suggested. A board game is also available as an assessment tool. Students navigate their way around Presque Isle Bay answering trivia questions in an attempt to collect more "life rings" than their opponents do. Note: no assessment could be made of on-board content delivered during the cruise.
