New York Ocean and Great Lakes Ecosystem Conservation Council Draft Report (1/30) In the report, “Our Waters, Our Communities, Our Future,” the council recommended a “ecosystem-based management” approach that will coordinate the efforts of various state agencies to address issues including land use, water quality, building capacity and research goals. The public review period is Jan. 30 through Mar. 2, 2009.
Wisconsin's Freshwater Estuary Initiative (1/29) Wisconsin’s Freshwater Estuary Initiative is an effort to increase awareness and promote stewardship of Wisconsin’s Great Lakes freshwater estuaries. The initiative involves the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and a diverse network of partners.

Ohio Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (1/22) The Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) helps protect coastal and estuarine lands considered important for their ecological, conservation, recreational, historical or aesthetic value. The Ohio Office of Coastal Management is accepting applications for FY 2010 CELCP funding until Feb. 17.

Predicting Future Introductions of Nonindigenous Species to the Great Lakes (1/8) This EPA report predicts the spread of aquatic nonindigenous species into the Great Lakes to help resource managers focus monitoring activities on particular species at the most vulnerable U.S. Great Lakes ports. The report also demonstrates the use of a habitat suitability model and ballast water discharge data to predict invasion potential.
New NOAA Great Lakes Laboratory Opens, New Acting Director Named (1/7) A larger facility to focus on Great Lakes issues opened today following a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Pittsfield Township, Mich.
Website dedicated to Asian carp management (1/6) AsianCarp.org is an official web site established to coordinate the implementation of control and management of Asian carps in the United States. Development and maintenance of this web site is supported by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service through a partnership with the University of Texas - Arlington.
GLIN's January 2009 Site of the Month (1/5) GLIN's January Site of the Month is the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), a newly redesigned site dedicated to providing wide internet access to real-time and historic data on the hydrology, biology, chemistry, geology and cultural resources of the Great Lakes, its interconnecting waterways and the St. Lawrence River.
