Local Investment in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence
Great Lakes Commission and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (2/27)
A new report concludes that local governments in the U.S. and Canada invest an estimated $15 billion annually to protect and restore the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, but cannot keep pace with the one-two punch of escalating threats to the resource and ongoing cuts in federal restoration programs.

International Upper Great Lakes Study

The International Joint Commission appointed the International Upper Great Lakes Study Board in February 2007 to examine whether the regulation of Lake Superior outflows can be improved to address the evolving needs of the upper Great Lakes. The study area includes lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie, and their interconnecting channels.

2008 Chicago Maritime Festival

Anishinabek of the Gitchi Gami Environmental Programs (AGG)

AGG is a citizen-based environmental not-for-profit organization on Fort William First Nation that empowers community members as stewards of the environment. "Anishinabek of the Gitchi Gami" is Ojibwa for "the people of the big water (i.e. Lake Superior)."

Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area proposal

A feasibility study was first initiated in 1997 to explore the possibility of a national marine conservation area in the northern waters and shores of Lake Superior. On Oct. 25, 2007, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that the designation is official, making it the largest freshwater conservation area in the world.

Evanston Lakefront Master Plan Process

A northern Chicago suburb has developed a coastal plan that may distinguish the community as having one of the most advanced coastal open space and protection strategies on the Great Lakes. Evanston’s draft “consensus” Lakefront Corridor Master Plan represents the first time Evanston has sought a vision for its coast.

National Ocean Sciences Bowl
GLIN's February 2008 Site of the Month (2/1)
The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) is an academic competition for high school students designed to generate interest and excitement about science and our oceans and Great Lakes. Each February, more than 300 schools and 2,000 students participate and compete at 25 regional NOSB sites.
