50th Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk Mackinac Bridge Authority (8/29) The walk begins at 7:00 a.m. on Sept. 3, in St. Ignace, at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge in the upper peninsula, and ends in Mackinaw City at the south end in the lower peninsula. The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third longest suspension bridge in the world, 5 miles in total length.
Migratory Birds of the Great Lakes University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute (8/28) As much as birds are masters of the sky, most of them also have equally powerful links to water — especially in our Great Lakes region. This online guide features 20 migratory birds common to the Great Lakes region, and explores their special relationships with water.
Great Lakes Beach and Pier Safety (8/27) The Great Lakes Beach and Pier Safety Task Force formed to bring together as many resources as possible to help educate the public on how to enjoy the Great Lakes safely.
Ecology of Lake Superior aboard the EPA Research Vessel Lake Guardian Michigan Technological University (MTU) (8/24) A team of faculty and scientists from MTU and U.S. EPA completed a working cruise on Lake Superior in support of bi-national Great Lakes monitoring programs. This travelogue of photos and video clips details the ships itinerary with spotlight sections highlighting specific scientific features of the voyage.
River Alliance of Wisconsin (8/23) The mission of the River Alliance of Wisconsin is to advocate for the protection, enhancement and restoration of Wisconsin’s rivers and watersheds.
Lake Superior Water Surface Temperatures NASA Earth Observatory (8/22) A recent study of temperature and wind trends on Lake Superior found that both summer wind speeds and water temperatures have increased between 1979 and 2006. Scientists are theorizing that the lake was able to warm up more because the spring melt is happening earlier.
Great Lakes Sea Grant Network Meeting (8/21) This meeting, Sept. 16-19, in Chicago, will bring together representatives of Sea Grant programs from the Great Lakes states to address issues of common interest.
Minnesota Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (8/20) The goal of the program is to assure a safe and healthy aquatic recreational environment by informing the water-going public about risk of contracting water-borne diseases. The program collects samples from 39 Lake Superior beaches and analyzes those samples for water-borne diseases and human health risks.
Great Lakes Maritime Academy (8/17) The Great Lakes Maritime Academy is a division of Northwestern Michigan College. The Academy trains men and women to serve as business professionals and Merchant Marine officers aboard Great Lakes and ocean ships. Great Lakes Maritime is designated as a regional maritime academy and the nation's only freshwater academy.
Save Lake Superior Association (8/15) Begun in 1969, the Save Lake Superior Association is the oldest citizen
group working exclusively to preserve and protect Lake Superior.
Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Water Resources Regional Body (8/14) Through the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Water Resources Regional Body, the Great Lakes Governors of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and the Premiers of Ontario and Québec are taking the lead in protecting the world’s largest source of surface fresh water.
World Water Week (8/13) The 2007 World Water Week, Aug. 12-18, in Stockholm, is a leading annual global meeting place for capacity-building, partnership-building and follow-up on the implementation of international processes and programs in water and development.
NOAA Celebrates 200 Years of Science, Service and Stewardship National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (8/9) NOAA’s 200th Celebration in 2007 will highlight the rich history of science, service, and stewardship provided to the American public by NOAA and its predecessors. Celebrate "A Day in the Great Lakes" with NOAA at John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, on Sept. 8.
Perspective on found Edmund Fitzgerald life ring (8/8) A life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior in November 1975, was found this week on the eastern shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula. This video clip offers commentary on the find from Tom Farnquist, director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society.
Testing the Waters 2007 Natural Resources Defense Council (8/7) NRDC's annual survey of water quality and public notification at U.S. beaches finds that pollution caused a record number of beach closings nationwide in 2006. The number of 2006 closing and advisory days at ocean, bay, and Great Lakes beaches topped 25,000 -- more than ever recorded in the survey's 17-year history.
Listen to Your Lakes Shedd Aquarium (8/6) After months of research and market testing, Shedd has launched a new Great Lakes awareness campaign. Listentoyourlakes.org includes a blog with up to date Great Lakes stories from around the basin, campaign updates and other musings.
International Upper Great Lakes Study (8/3) Commissioned by the International Joint Commission, the Upper Great Lakes Study area includes lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie, and their interconnecting channels (St. Marys River, St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, Detroit River and Niagara River), up to Niagara Falls. Major topics for investigation include determining the factors that affect water levels and flows, developing and testing potential new regulation plans, and assessing the impacts of these potential plans on the ecosystem and human interests.
Superior Watershed Partnership (8/2) The Superior Watershed Partnership, formerly known as the Central Lake Superior Watershed Partnership, implements a variety of environmental and stream restoration projects including dam removals, habitat restoration, native plant reintroduction and shoreline stabilization. The Partnership also provides technical, educational and monitoring assistance on a variety of Great Lakes protection initiatives with emphasis on lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron.
The Council of State Governments, Midwestern Office GLIN's August 2007 Site of the Month (8/1) The CSG Midwestern Office supports the efforts of several regional groups of state officials, including the Midwestern Legislative Conference, the Midwestern Governors Association and the Great Lakes Legislative Caucus, which is committed to strengthening the role of state and provincial legislators in the Great Lakes-related policymaking process while promoting the restoration and protection of the Great Lakes.
