April 2009 EstuaryLive on May 1st (4/30) EstuaryLive is an annual, free, live, interactive, field trip through our nation’s estuaries. On May 1st, join naturalists from around the country explore one of our nation’s most precious resources: estuaries, where rivers meet the sea. Frogwatch USA (4/29) FrogWatch USA is a Citizen Science Monitoring Program that gives volunteers the opportunity to help scientists conserve amphibians by gathering information that will help increase awareness of nationwide amphibian declines. Great Lakes Congressional Report (4/28) The latest issue of the Great Lakes Congressional Report from the Northeast-Midwest Institute is now available online. The newsletter provides an update on congressional activities regarding Great Lakes monitoring and research, funding, waste water treatment, ice breaking, and more. The Ohio Ornithological Society (4/27) The Ohio Ornithological Society's is the only statewide organization specifically devoted to fostering a deeper appreciation of wild birds and preserving Ohio's bird habitats. The MiCorps Monitor (4/24) The latest edition of the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) newsletter, the MiCorps Monitor is now available online. It's full of updates and information on the activities and individuals of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's MiCorps program. National System for Marine Protected Areas Launched (4/23) In an effort to conserve critical natural and cultural marine resources, the U.S. Departments of Interior and Commerce are partnering with federal, state and territorial agencies to form a National System of Marine Protected Areas (MPA). This new national system provides a mechanism for all levels of government to work together. Earth Day 2009 (4/22) April 22nd is Earth Day - the first completely international and universal holiday. At the EPA's website, you can learn about the history of Earth Day, view the EPA administrator's Earth Day message and find Earth Day events near you. National Park Week (4/21) National Park Week, celebrated April 18-26, 2009, is an annual Presidentially proclaimed week for celebration and recognition of your National Parks. Liquid Assets (4/20) Liquid Assets is a documentary film and part of a public media and outreach initiative that seeks to inform the nation about the critical role that our water infrastructure plays in protecting public health and promoting economic prosperity. Little Forks Conservancy (4/17) The Little Forks Conservancy partners with private landowners in or near Michigan's Tittabawassee River watershed to protect and preserve the unique natural features of the region. Healthy Beaches Action Guide (4/16) Alliance for the Great Lakes' new 22-page, downloadable “Healthy Beaches Action Guide: How You Can Help Your Great Lakes Shoreline,” explores ways that individuals and others can improve beach health. Wisconsin Marina Association (4/15) The Wisconsin Marina Association (WMA) is a new forum to help enhance Wisconsin’s great marinas, promote boating and increase tourism to harbor towns. Google Earth now includes Great Lakes (4/14) Through a cooperative effort with the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) and the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center, Google Earth now incorporates detailed bathymetry for the five Great Lakes. Check it out to view the landscape from beneath the water surface! The Compass (4/13) The April 2009 edition of The Compass, the online newsletter of the Council of Great Lakes Governors, is now available for download online. Asian carp and the Great Lakes (4/10) Read information from the EPA about Asian carp, their potential effects on the Great Lakes, and the newly activated Asian carp barrier in Chicago. National Cell Phone Recycling Week (4/9) This year, the EPA launched National Cell Phone Recycling Week. During the week of April 6 through April 12, 2009, Americans can participate in this national event by donating or recycling their unwanted cell phones, PDAs and their accessories. Michigan Nature Association (4/8) Established in 1952, the Michigan Nature Association is a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting Michigan's exceptional natural habitats and extraordinary and endangered plants and animals. Legacy Land Conservancy (4/7) The Legacy Land Conservancy (formerly Washtenaw Land Trust) protects the forests, fields, wetlands, and rivers of southern Michigan. Serving Washtenaw and Jackson counties, the Conservancy’s mission is to protect local nature and farmland. Poisoned Waters (4/6) On April 21, PBS Frontline will broadcast Poisoned Waters, a two-hour investigation and report card on two iconic American waterways, Chesapeake Bay and Puget Sound. In this broadcast, Frontline examines rising hazards to human health and the ecosystem, and why it’s so hard to keep our waters clean. On The Level newsletter (4/3) The spring 2009 edition of On The Level, the newsletter of the Upper Great Lakes Study, is now available online. How the Earth Was Made: Great Lakes (4/2) The History Channel's new episode of "How the Earth Was Made" featuring the Great Lakes can now be viewed online: click the above link, select "Full Episodes" from the brown navigation bar, and select "How the Earth Was Made: The Great Lakes." GLIN's April Site of the Month (4/1) GLIN's April Site of the Month is the Great Lakes-Northern Forest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, a program of research, technical assistance and education that supports preservation of Great Lakes Northern Forest ecosystems.
