What's New Senate expected to vote on bill regarding Canadian nuclear waste dumping The Southgate News Herald (5/22) A Canadian nuclear power company wants to dump waste at an Ontario site about a mile off the shore of Lake Huron. A Michigan state senator has stepped in with a proposal to help stop the dumping. Rain garden project keeps contaminants out of Highland Park waterways Highland Park News (5/13) As part of the 21st annual Friends of the Chicago River Day, volunteers planted rain gardens and took part in activities to help remove trash and contaminants from river banks throughout the Chicago, Ill., area. Filter at East Bay park to reduce E. coli Traverse City Record-Eagle (5/12) With Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding, a new filter system at East Bay Park in Traverse City, Mich., is being built to help keep the popular swimming beach clear of a main culprit for E. coli contamination. Scotts drops phosphorus from lawn fertilizer The Columbus Dispatch (5/10) Scotts Miracle-Gro has removed phosphorus from its popular Turf Builder line of lawn fertilizer to help reduce the type of harmful algae blooms that have plagued waterways such as Grand Lake St. Marys and Lake Erie. Ground broken for huge ‘green’ parking lot at Metro Beach The Macomb Daily (5/10) Officials gathered for the groundbreaking of a $3.3 million project to create an environmentally friendly parking lot at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township, Mich. The lot will reduce pollution runoff into the lake and help prevent beach closings due to tainted water. New program in works to help curb sediment runoff to River Raisin The Manchester Enterprise (5/8) A group of conservation professionals and government officials met May 4 to introduce a new program to reduce sediment runoff into the River Raisin.
