State of Michigan gets grant to buy sensitive Upper Peninsula wetlands

Michigan has been awarded its first GLRI grant, $1.7 million to buy and protect wetlands, sand dunes, and shoreline frontage in the Bete Gris area, near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior.

A report from Town of Fort Erie, Ont., planners published Monday recommends a zoning change to permit the building of a 12-story condominium in Crystal Beach near Lake Erie. Critics say the condominium would do irrevocable harm to the town's beachfront charm.

Computers target Lake Erie erosion

Along the eastern coast of Lake Erie in Ohio, where waves can wash away as much as six feet of land each year, living close to the shoreline can put a home in danger of washing away in 10 to 30 years, according to a new computer model created by Ohio Sea Grant.
