Seaway, river group agree to disagree

For several years, Save the River has been fighting winter navigation through the Seaway and efforts to expand the water route to accommodate larger, oceangoing vessels.

5 lakers reactivated

In an encouraging sign, five vessels returned to service on the Great Lakes in October, boosting the carrying capacity of the active U.S. laker fleet by nearly 25 percent compared with the previous month, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association. The reactivated ships returned about 100 people to work, the trade organization said.

President Obama came through on a campaign pledge last month, signing legislation that will provide $475 million to launch his Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The news is especially encouraging for Buffalo, which has a strong possibility of securing funds for a $60 million project to remove contaminated sediments from the Buffalo River.

Chicago canal to be poisoned to stop Asian carp

Early next month, more than 200 people are expected to participate in a two-day, $1.5 million project to poison nearly 6 miles of canal just southwest of Chicago. The idea is for biologists to temporarily kill the river so a new electric fish barrier can be briefly shut down for maintenance.

Rate of decrease slows for coal shipments
Duluth News Tribune (11/11)
October’s coal shipments on the Great Lakes were 5 percent lower than in October 2008 — the smallest decrease this year, according to numbers released Tuesday by the Lake Carriers’ Association.
