Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) will lead a nine-person Toledo delegation to Nova Scotia to tour the site of a proposed deepwater container terminal that could become a link for international freight shipments to and from Toledo. Dock project to add wharf $4M addition would help during low water Crain's Detroit Business (6/30) Detroit's $15 million effort to build a new public passenger ship terminal and dock will also see an additional $4 million to $5 million spent to construct an offshore wharf in the Detroit River. Wind power a dilemma for Ontario The Toronto Star (6/30) Trillium Power wants to build a 750-megawatt offshore wind farm about 15 kilometres off the shore of Prince Edward County. That works out to about 150 wind turbines, seen as specks from the shoreline. And there's potential to double that. Turning garbage into gas The Environment Report (6/23) Landfill fees are rising, and with higher costs to ship or truck garbage, a lot of communities are scrounging for alternatives to landfills. National Center for Industrial Competitiveness NCIC helps technology based companies in Ohio and the Great Lakes region by providing financial, technical and management support. Northeast-Midwest Institute The Institute is a policy research center providing staff support to the House and Senate Great Lakes Task Forces. Policy research focuses on invasive species, ecosystem restoration, island conservation, water management, brownfield redevelopment, economic benefits of sediment remediation, energy, and other issues important to the Great Lakes. Société de développement économique du Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence Economic Development Council) Established in November 1985, the SODES is a non-profit organization mandated to protect and promote the economic interests of the St. Lawrence. SODES represents the St. Lawrence maritime community, which includes all public and private agencies whose activities have a direct or indirect impact on the economy of the St. Lawrence within Québec, and voices its concerns to governments with regard to the economic development and life of the St. Lawrence. Transportation and Sustainable Development Program Great Lakes Commission The program promotes sustainable, resource-based economic activity and the use, development and maintenance of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence transportation system.
